Heather Sutherland - Kiltmaker
I have always been interested in crafting. From a young age my mother taught me to knit and sew. However, after lockdown in 2020 I discovered kiltmaking - I took the course with the Edinburgh Kiltmakers Academy and found that I was actually quite good at it!
After completing the initial course, I then made 12 kilts for customers of Gordon Nicolson Kiltmakers that were quality checked to ensure that the kilts I make are done to a high standard. I then undertook further training in kilt adjustments and also in making kilts with military pleats.
I still make kilts for GNK on a freelance basis but I have now branched out on my own. The benefit to you is you will receive the same standard of kilt but slightly cheaper as I do not have the same overheads to cover.
Sustainability is a key value for me that means I will make a kilt that can 'grow' with you. My desire is not to create a garment just for you, but one that will be able to be passed on to future generations. The kilt will be hand-sewn, using traditional techniques, from cloth woven here in Scotland. Most cloth will be sourced from either House of Edgar or Lochcarron
Traditional hand-sewn kilts are a produced from techniques that are on the 'Endangered Craft' list in the UK and I am hoping to do my part in keeping this alive!
